Delaware Ave/ West 3rd St Pedestrian Crossing

From "Complete Streets"

Go to the project

There are numerous issues with the Delaware Ave/ West 3rd Street roadway. First and foremost is the rate of speed in which traffic passes through here. Vehicles all travel well above the 25mph posted speed limit here. The issue is so rampant that when I, a resident on a branch street, drive the speed limit I have been aggressively tailgated and HONKED AT for driving at the posted speed limit. This tells me that people are so ignorant to the speed limit that they don't even know what it is. So much so that they get angry when you don't move at 40mph+!

Additionally, the shear volume of traffic only adds to this problem. With the light onto 378, we end up with a large volume of speeding traffic racing to make the light before it changes. This creates an unsafe and unpleasant corridor for pedestrian and bicycle traffic to traverse the roadway.

Additionally, when attempting to cross Delaware Ave there is no safe way to do so. We have spent over 10 minutes waiting to cross Delaware ave at the non-signaled cross walks off the bend between the Dakota Street and Cherokee Street intersections. There is no awareness of pedestrian attempts to cross at these points. Lights and signs to help control traffic and make drivers aware would likely go a long way. This as well as a regular exercise in police detail/presence in this corridor would help peak awareness and hopefully help to regulate vehicular speeds.

Traveling by bike on any stretch of the Delaware Ave/W. 3rd St corridor is also dangerous due to the driver unawareness to cyclists. Between deep street/curb drains, parallel parked cars and all of the hectic traffic it's radically dangerous for cyclists to pass. A more pleasant roadway may benefit a large amount of St. Luke's employees and surrounding residents with a safer place to commute to and from work. Especially abutting to the Greenway.

With that, traffic calming measures such as narrower roadways (by also including separated bike lanes) would create a much safer roadway here.
