West Union Boulevard and West Broad Street

From "Complete Streets"

Go to the project

Reduce the speed limits on broad and Union from 35 to 25 or add another light or two along the way. Enforcement is not the issue.

Crossing Union to get to downtown is hard at the 378 intersection. Nobody stops for pedestrians. Even IN the crossing people honk at you and slow down versus stopping. One time one guy went AROUND someone who stopped for my family to cross and almost hit us. It's where the sidewalk is now closed that intersection....conestoga street. A light would also stop people playing Russian roulette going across to the ramp from Conestoga. People literally don't understand that the turning lane isn't a stop sign it's a turning lane...even if you've waited 10 minutes at Conestoga the people in the turning lane have the right of way. It ends up becoming a race and in the meantime pedestrians are crossing. I don't know how someone has not gotten hit there yet.

...There IS a light at OBT but that doesn't stop people from going 50+ mph down Union to that point. Even if it's just a push button signal and not necessarily full traffic lights it would make a difference. Same on broad past the dollar store.... another light would make a huge difference or lower the speed limit. Increased traffic in this area caused this. Both roads have much more traffic than even 10 years ago.

In terms of the bike network and biking..... I think more people need to use some common sense and this is from someone who's biked thousands of miles on these roads. Bikers need to have reflective vests and lights, use turn signals, move over for faster traffic. I see too many bikers who can't accelerate or aren't fast enough to be on busy roads hog them. On the flip side there is the occasional ahole driving but for the most part I feel I get courtesy and right of way at least to the point I can pull over and let faster traffic pass. I've been on schoenersville road.... no problems. Airport road....no problems. One thing that can be done is to map out all the 25 mph roads and post them up as safer routes to bike on/ put a map of routes out color coded on safety. For example Pennsylvania avenue might be a yellow for bike with caution....8th avenue a red.... Side streets green. Those are my thoughts. Thanks

@Dimitri Hoimes Our Citizens Traffic Advisory Committee often works to educate residents of traffic safety laws, and education on bike safety both for the rider and driver. We will continue to do so as our bike network evolves, and riders have dedicated space on our roadways. Appreciate your time and comments!

I know this is not on your agenda right now but I wish they would do something about the amount of speeders from Broad Street to Union Blvd. It is like a speedway and the speed limit is 30 MPH. I wish they could start ticketing people or something. It is awful.

Just wanted to validate this comment, an communicate that we hear you. Speeding is most definitely an issue that we will need to address. Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback, feel free to identify other areas of concern, as well as your thoughts on the bike network!
