Senior Services
The City delivers direct services:
- Project Lifesaver: A program designed for individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s who are prone to the life-threatening behavior of wandering. Individuals enrolled in Project Lifesaver wear a small transmitter that emits an individualized frequency signal. If an enrolled client goes missing, the caregiver notifies their local Project Lifesaver agency and a trained emergency team responds to the wanderer’s area.
- Matter of Balance: A fall prevention program specifically designed to reduce the fear of falling and improve activity levels among older adults. The program includes eight 2-hour classes presented to a small group of participants led by trained coaches. The program enables participants to reduce the fear of falling by learning to view falls as controllable, setting goals for increasing activity levels, making small changes to reduce fall risks at home, and exercising to increase strength and balance.
- Healthy Homes: Healthy Homes addresses housing-related health and safety hazards. The initiative takes a comprehensive approach by focusing on housing-related hazards in a coordinated fashion, rather than addressing a single hazard at a time.
City Supports Service Delivery through funding sources:
- The City of Bethlehem allocated $20,000 from the Community Recovery Fund towards Senior Service program Implementation.
- ITN Lehigh Valley operates a Senior Ride Program accessible to seniors age 60 and older, as well as visually impaired adults of any age, residing in Lehigh and Northampton counties. There is no limit on ride purpose within the designated service area of Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton and surrounding suburbs. A grant in 2023 will ensure that ITNLV can meet the needs of our riders while we actively work to rebuild a robust corps of volunteer drivers and increase membership and ride capacity.
