Develop a concrete bicycling plan for Bethlehem - Bike lanes, racks, etc
Desde "Calles Completas"
Ir al proyecto
Join other cities in making Bethlehem a real bike-friendly city.
Make a plan to add "X" miles of bike lanes each year.
Add protected and or buffered bike lanes whenever possible...especially when re-doing roads (Broad, Linden, Easton, New, etc). Make routes so leisure and cycling commuters can safely get downtown and then back out.
Then add more bicycling route signs and add more bike racks.
Address biking over bridges.
All this would remove more 'barriers to entry' to attracting more people to get out of their cars and bike.

Strongly support this idea, and I’m excited to get involved at the next round of meetings.
In terms of the bridges, improving access to the Fahy from the north should be easiest to tackle. There appears to be plenty of pavement on both Center and Lehigh to add dedicated lanes, including for turning. The approach from the south between Second and Columbia could be improved, as riders currently need to move quickly to cross Second street, make the light and climb the approach ramp without adequate room for cars to pass. In both cases (and in many other places in the city, like the Broad Street project), it would be amazing if green bike lights could be added to the traffic signals to give riders a head start crossing the intersections before motor vehicle traffic begins to move. This alone would have the benefit of reminding drivers that bikes are often present in town.
Riding on the Minsi Trail is terrible given the speed of traffic and the bends limiting the line of sight. Riders are forced to use the narrow sidewalk, which can’t be done safely if there are walkers or other riders present. Because of the traffic noise, it’s often too loud for walkers to hear cyclists using bells or yelling out when approaching. When riding to the south, crossing Daly Ave to access the Greenway feels particularly unsafe in the crosswalk, given limited visibility and the tendency for drivers to roll through the light, even when red.

@Dave Mest Just wanted to thank you for providing this context. This is very helpful to understand your lived experience using these facilities to ride your bike.
I look forward to meeting you at our next event. We are planning another Open House, and Pop-Up Series for the Spring/Summer. Stay tuned for more announcements soon on this page.

Would love to see some bike lanes. The greenway is great, and theres lots of trails nearby for recreation, but trying to actually commute around the area by bike doesn't feel safe at all.

Good afternoon Lisa,
You have really wonderful ideas mentioned.
This plan, while not setting "X" miles a year type goals, will first and foremost be prioritizing safety on our roadways for all users.
When we review the capital improvement plan for the next fiscal year, each project will be evaluated for complete street treatments, as we try to build out the network.
Street types will also be considered, some streets lend themselves to bike lanes, while others do not. Wayfinding is a great point, and something we are discussing as part of this plan.
Feel free to offer more commentary, its so very helpful! We will have more chances for public engagement in Spring, so stay tuned on this page!
